Rear Extension in Slough — 1930s Semi-Detached Kitchen Extension

A 1930s semi-detached property in Slough, SL1. This project extended the rear kitchen by approximately 3m, adding a pitched tiled roof to match the original 1930s clay tiles, and red brick to match the original facing brick. Reclaimed clay peg tiles were sourced from a salvage merchant to match the existing roof tiles exactly. The result looks like the extension has always been there. Ten weeks on site.

Strip foundations and drainage — rear extension Slough

Stage 1

Foundations & Drainage

Strip foundations at 650mm — gravel and sand sub-soil typical for this part of Slough. Surface water drainage diverted around the new footprint via a new gully connection.

Pitched roof structure with matching tiles — Slough rear extension

Stage 2

Pitched Roof Structure

Pitched timber roof at 35° — traditional cut roof. Rafters, ridge board, wall plates. Roofing felt, battens, and reclaimed clay peg tiles. Hipped end on the gable-end wall of the extension, matching the hipped roof profile of the original 1930s wing. Lead flashing at the junction with the existing roof.

External Matching

Reclaimed clay peg tiles laid by our experienced roofing team — these require hand-sorting for size consistency before laying. New red brick matching was confirmed via sample panel approved by the client before the wall above DPC level was built.

The Brief

The client's brief was specifically about character. They had a 1930s semi and they didn't want a flat-roof box that looked like an afterthought. They wanted the extension to look period-correct — red brick, pitched roof, clay tiles. We sourced reclaimed clay tiles from a salvage merchant to match the existing roof tiles exactly, and matched the brick from our regular suppliers.

What We Built

Single storey rear extension, 3m × 3.5m footprint. Red facing brick (reclaimed / matched) on the outer leaf to match 1930s brick tone. Pitched tile roof at 35° matching the angle of the existing kitchen wing. Original clay peg tiles sourced for the new roof. Concrete strip foundations at 650mm. RSJ over the internal opening. New timber-framed window and rear door in the gable-end wall.

FAQ

Single Storey Extensions Questions Answered

Why does matching period brick matter?

On a 1930s semi, original bricks have a specific colour, texture, and mortar joint style. Modern facing bricks are noticeably different in tone. Using reclaimed or matched bricks ensures the extension reads as part of the original house — particularly important in conservation-adjacent areas of Slough and for resale value.

Is a pitched roof extension more expensive than a flat roof?

Yes — typically 15–20% more. A pitched tile roof requires cut roof carpentry, roofing felt and battens, and a specialist tile layer (especially for reclaimed tiles). The labour cost is higher than a GRP flat roof. For period properties the visual result justifies the premium.

What is the permitted development rule for a pitched roof single storey extension?

The roof must not exceed 4m in height for a dual pitch or 3m for any other form. This extension's roof height at the ridge was 3.6m — within permitted development.
